Hunt Country Equine Mobile Veterinary Service offers a prevention-focused Equine Wellness Program that combines needed seasonal care (Vaccines, Coggins, etc.) with twice-yearly general condition exams. Checking temperature, hydration, teeth, eyes, heart, lungs, lumps and bumps on a regular basis can help catch subtle changes that even the most attentive owner might miss. And as with human patients, early detection is a critical part of successful treatment.
An important feature of the annual Spring and Fall Wellness exams is a fecal count that identifies specifically what de-worming treatment is needed for each horse. This step ensures that the type and timing of de-wormers for each horse is based on actual need rather than on a generic national chart. That’s becoming more important as research shows some parasites developing resistance to some common wormers and doses. Parasites are known to cause lethal cases of colic as well as weight loss
Customers who sign up for the 2026 Wellness Program will be given a 15% discount on all basic Wellness services – both time and materials. Several optional Wellness services can be added for those who need them, and those optional services will also be discounted 15% if they’re elected during the sign-up process.
The Wellness Program discount is made possible through pre-planning and pre-payment, which allows Hunt Country Equine to make of advance bulk purchases and pass those cost savings on to customers. To be eligible for the Wellness Program discount, customers must complete an authorization form for each horse to be enrolled and payment made prior to December 31st, 2025.

ACTH (PPID testing)
Insulin (EMS testing)
T4 (Thyroid function test)
*****ACTH, Insulin and T4 are all blood tests that measure metabolic function. Metabolic issues in horses can lead to laminitis, and we have many horses within our practice that have cushings syndrome and/or insulin resistance, so we decided to add these options to the Wellness Program this year. Below is more information about each of the metabolic tests offered:
ACTH (Cushings/PPID testing)-ACTH testing is used to identify Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID), also known as Equine Cushing's Disease. Baseline ACTH is also the test we use to monitor treatment; once a horse is diagnosed, we test their ACTH levels at least once yearly to monitor treatment and medication dosage. The test measures the concentration of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) in the horse's blood, a hormone produced by the pituitary gland. PPID is a common endocrine disorder in older horses, and early detection is crucial for the effective management and prevention of serious complications like laminitis. Although most horses with Cushings are older, some horses can be diagnosed in their early teens. If you are concerned about a long hair coat, abnormal sweating, changes in body condition/topline, a pot-bellied appearance, excessive drinking/urination, etc, you may want to think about testing your horse. Baseline ACTH is often diagnostic for PPID, but some horses require a TRH stimulation test to be accurately diagnosed. Your veterinarian will discuss this with you if we feel that a TRH stim test is a better tool for initial diagnosis in your horse.
Insulin-Testing baseline insulin levels is a diagnostic tool to evaluate the horse's metabolic health, primarily to detect insulin dysregulation. This is a key component of diagnosing Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS). EMS is a major risk factor for laminitis. We typically recommend not feeding a grain or concentrate for at least 4 horses prior to testing to obtain an accurate result. We sometimes will recommend a complete fasting prior to testing and this will be up to the doctor and particular case presentation. Signs you may want to consider testing your horse's insulin would be abnormal fat deposits throughout their body (most often shoulders, ribs and rump), history or signs of laminitis, a cresty neck and obesity. Early detection can help prevent laminitis and other issues.
T4-T4 testing is used often in combination with insulin testing as a measure of overall metabolic function and we often use thyroid supplementation as part of our treatment for weight loss or in management of EMS,
